Why did the golfer bring string to the course?
To tie up his loose ends!
Story: Tying Up Loose Ends
It was the final round of the Oakwood Golf Championship, and Jack “Loose Ends” Thompson was in the lead—a position no one expected him to be in. Jack was notorious for playing great for 17 holes but always falling apart on the last one. His friends joked that he could “tie up everything except the 18th hole.”
Determined to change his luck, Jack showed up that morning with a piece of string tied around his wrist.
“What’s with the string, Jack?” his caddie Mike asked, puzzled.
Jack grinned. “It’s my secret weapon. Today, I’m tying up all my loose ends.”
A Great Start
Jack played the front nine like a pro—straight drives, crisp iron shots, and smooth putts. His confidence soared as he made the turn at 3 under par.
“Looks like the string’s working,” Mike joked.
Jack chuckled. “Told you! No more loose ends today.”
The Back Nine Battle
The back nine got tougher, with tricky bunkers and water hazards. On the 14th hole, Jack’s ball barely missed the water, staying dry by inches.
“See?” Jack said, showing off the string on his wrist. “Saved by the string!”
Mike rolled his eyes. “Whatever works, man.”
The Infamous 18th Hole
Finally, they reached the dreaded 18th—a long par-5 with water guarding the green. This hole had crushed Jack’s hopes many times before.
Jack teed up, took a deep breath, and launched a perfect drive down the middle of the fairway. His second shot was equally brilliant, leaving him just 100 yards from the green.
“You’ve got this!” Mike encouraged.
Jack nodded, determined. He swung… and splash! His ball veered into the water hazard.
“No! Not again!” Jack groaned, staring at his wrist. “String, you had one job!”
Finishing Strong
Refusing to give up, Jack dropped another ball and hit a perfect wedge shot within three feet of the pin. He drained the putt, saving par and clinching the championship by one stroke!
As the crowd cheered, Mike patted Jack on the back. “Looks like you finally tied up that loose end.”
Jack smiled, holding up his wrist. “I guess even a piece of string can be lucky… as long as you don’t hit it into the water.”
